The play on the lake - reaching for the stars
Giacomo Puccini wrote one of the most famous arias in his last opera. ‘Nessun dorma’ was a command to the Princess Turandot to last for one night: if by the next morning she had not found out the name of the unknown prince, she was to reciprocate his love. Like so many men before him, the unknown prince was spellbound by the appearance of Turandot. He wanted to secure her genuine affections and set her a puzzle. If she could find out his name by the next morning, he would be prepared to die.
The composer spent many years working on the subsequent love story between Turandot and Calaf. The work is characterised by a Chinese ambience, powerful choral scenes and characters overwhelmed by emotion. The puzzle scene is transformed into a musical contest between a soprano and tenor. Puccini has the lovers reaching for the stars with plenty of effects and devotion.
